The Different Fanatec QR2 Solutions Explained

Fanatec has taken an important step in the evolution of sim racing hardware with the introduction of the Fanatec QR2 Quick Release. The new generation of Quick Releases offers improved fit, stability and reliability. Several variants are available, both on the side of the wheelbase if it steering wheel.

This can cause confusion when choosing the right combination. This article explains the differences between the different QR2 Base-Side and QR2 Wheel-Side variants, so you can make an informed choice.

Fanatec QR2 Base-Side Variants

To optimise the QR2 Quick Releases, Fanatec has three different Base-Side variants developed. These are designed to ensure the right fit and functionality for different wheel base models.

1. Fanatec QR2 Base-Side (Type-M)

The Fanatec QR2 Base-Side (Type-M) version is specially designed for the Podium Wheel Bases (DD1 and DD2). This model is made of silver CNC-machined aluminium, ensuring a robust and durable connection. This version is intended for high-end users within the Fanatec ecosystem.

Fanatec QR2 Wheel-Side Variants

Besides the different Base-Side variants, Fanatec also offers three types of QR2 Wheel-Side couplers. The choice of a particular model depends on the desired compatibility and materials.

1. Fanatec QR2 Lite Wheel-Side

The Fanatec QR2 Lite is the most budget-friendly option within the QR2 range and the direct successor to the QR1 Lite. This model is made of carbon fibre-reinforced composite, which in practice means a plastic construction. While the shape is largely similar to the QR1 Lite, some important changes have been made.

The Lite variant has some limitations:

  • Not compatible with all handlebars with an interchangeable quick release due to the presence of the torque detection pin.
  • Does not support High Torque Mode on Podium DDs and has limited support on ClubSport DDs (with the exception of the steering wheel of the Gran Turismo DD Extreme).
  • For use with a Podium Wheel Base, a steering wheel with a metal QR2 Wheel-Side is required to activate High Torque Mode.

This version is primarily intended for users within the Fanatec CSL series who need an affordable and functional Quick Release.
